
There is a stone cross up the lane from my house. The date on the cross says 1746. So, it must have been there from well before electricity.
I haven't given this much thought until one day I looked at the crossroads and thought: it would have dominated the surrounding landscape had it not been for the electricity pylons all around it now.
Do we have to have energy delivered to us on poles littering our landscape? Wouldn't it be more pleasant to the eye and safer to, say, put them under ground? Surely, we have enough heavy machinery to do that these days.
And why on Earth should wind turbines be seen as 'ugly' while electric pylons and poles - not?
